Thanks for the replies guys...the car is in SE NH, and by garaged in winter, I meant not driven (as well as garaged). I think the timing chain might have let go, but since I wasn't there and in the car at the time, I don't know for sure. Based on my dad'* description of what happened when he was driving it at the time, that'* one thing that entered my mind. Swapping in a newer engine was something he and I discussed, but neither of us has seriously looked around for a newer Series II or III with complete wiring harness and that hasn't been abused or trashed in an accident. Thanks again for everyone'* thoughts - you confirmed what I'd been thinking. If the car was down here, I would take a more detailed look at it and probably pull the front cover.
