Default 1990 Olds Eighty Eight help please...

My sister just bought a 1990 Oldsmobile Eighty Eight with Vin C motor today for $100 cash, It'* got a few problems but seems to be a solid car. 143K, Her boyfreind used to own the car but sat it behind his garage when it started making noises a year ago. He drove it for six months, His Grandfather owned it before him.

1. There is a serious banging noise in the LF driveline, It bangs harder when you accelerate and changes tempo with speed. CV axle?

2. The front brakes are shot, Someone needs shot for letting them get that way.

3. The engine makes a light metal slapping heavy metal sound when drooping revs, Sounds like a timing chain to me, Thoughts? How close is this to my 87 or 93?

4. When I first started it it smoked like a **** and kept dying, Fresh gas seems to have fixed that now... What made that happen?

5. The speedometer doesn't work, Is it cable or electric?

6. The trim on the LR door fell off, anyone know a part number for those white clips?

Other than this the car just needs washed, interior is mint.

Thanks in advance guys

My car makes a pronounced thud when you let off the gas, mostly in 2nd gear (ie, approaching a stop sign on a residential street). I'm assuming its pertaining to mounts so far - the thud is like when you're stopped and the jerk you get when you're shifting into reverse/park/neutral/whatever.

Similar to the banging noise you've got?

Crap! that reminds me, The Front tranny mount is shot.

This banging noise in the driveline sounds like it'* right behind the wheel...

Just had DrJay listen to it, I'm going to make sure it'* not the water pump and start working on getting that CV swapped.

Any ideas on my other concerns?

When you fix the brake prob, don't forget to replace the rubber brake lines as well. If they have never been replaced, they are sure to fail very soon.

When my speedo failed it was the vehicle speed sensor(VSS). But you would also notice that the transmission would be not be going into OD and your Cruise Control would also not work.

what color is it? I still miss my 1990 88 Royale. Had 201k when traded.

If the noise is the same as mine was, it comes from the transaxle area right?

If you find those clips, share the warmth, I checked 2 GM dealers for the same things and came up empty handed.

Price was more than right

That sounds exactly like the sound I'm getting...I'll have to check that, Thanks.

It'* Medium Garnet Red with a Garnet Red interior, Split bench, Column shift, Great paint too. Just needs the trim fixed and a hubcap replaced, Then it'll look like it just rolled out of the factory.

I have the CV on the ground now, It fell apart, Definatly bad.

I saw them on here somewhere.... Someone with a black 87-91 was asking how to get that peice of trim off... My pictures in my parts books don't look like the same peice, I think I have the one that was used in the higher level bonne'* or something...

She made him sell it for $100... He wanted to give it to her... Girls

Medium Garnet Red Metallic...my favorite GM color. That was the color of my sisters '92 Olds 88, its the color of her current '93 Olds 88, and its also the color of my '90 GP STE....I LOVE that color, and it grows on me more and more every day. It must be a nice looking car. Also, none of the cars with that color on them have any fading/chalking/peeling problems, whereas many GM colors during that time period did.

SAME colors as mine! Geez Straitor, you gotta get some pics sometime. Is the seat cloth kinda tweed looking and does it have aluminum turbine wheels or spoked hubcaps? mine had the turbine wheels. Full gauges? Air suspension?

My old one didnt look so good when it left, hardly any paint on the top surfaces and some wanna bee gang bangers graffittied it one night, I did get most of it off the glass and headlights, but the paint was pretty much ruined after that. Wish they would stick to railroad cars instead of MY car LOL.

We're all in agreement here. But, then again, that'* my color too. The only part that'* fading/faded is the left rear door and the "C" Pilar. Go figa'. My car has the gray interior. It'* a plain Royale and not the Brougham.
