Default 1989 SES light

Hey all, great site!

My 89 Bonneville SSE (3.8 v-6) has the SES light on. I got the codes out (26 & 41). 41 is listed as "RPM-cylinder select error" and I cant find a listing for 26. It does idle high-1500 in park, 1200 in gear, other than that it runs fine. The high idle bothers me more than the actual light, but I'm sure they are related. Can someone check me on the codes?

So far I have only cleaned the IAC motor & bore out, no change in idle RPM. It was a little carboned up though. I tried to get the MAF meter off to clean the throttle body, but it seemed stuck on & I didnt want to force it (not familiar with these motors!). I took the 4 screws off and 1 side seemed to stick. Did I get all of it?

Any way, I am thinking the TPS is out of adjustment. I just got this car & it has a ton of new parts on it, including the TPS. I have adjusted these on TPI motors before, is everything the same with this one? <1 volt at idle correct?
Thanks!
Nick (aka newbie!)

Code 41 is actually your Cam Position Sensor. ...ya...Jr got it right too..hee hee, we are both veterans of this mess

For quick info, do a search on Code 41 on this site. I went through this mess.

Same here.... And there were a couple of others somewhere..
I'm sorry to say I'm part of that crowd....

I think there should be a badge you get for those who have had the horrible code 41 error. Maybe a two part badge, ones that have had it, and an extra part for those who have dished out the $$$ to have it fixed.

2x4, the piece that is broken for the code 41 (cam sensor) is actually kinda cheap, but it'* the labor that kills you. I believe it'* like $20 for the part, and $300 for the labor (I could be wrong, it was 3yrs ago when I had mine done).

As for your weird ilde RPM, I would say TPS, I had the same problem (oddly enough at the same time I had my cam sensor replaced). But I am no mechanical guru... best to wait for one of the pros to speak up.

Replacing my cam magnet was a hour/ one bolt job (and letting the JB weld dry overnight). See http://www.6007.us/cammag.htm . Is worth trying.

Thanks for the quick replies, your all on the ball!

So it looks like I'm about to earn my "Code 41 Wings" I've already been through the "3 of the 4 doors wont open" deal, that was a fun one! Cant complain though, I got this car cheap. It had a battery drain in it somewhere & the garage the old owners took it to replaced everything but never found the problem. Ended up being a short in the seatbelt buzzer sender in the door. Good for me

I'll do a search & get more info on it, probably be fixing it this weekend. Shouldnt this be making it run wierd? It runs fine, doesnt miss a beat..

Wow, nice job padgett!
What are the chances I can find a good one at the boneyard? We got a new one here with decent looking cars, time to play!
